Philip Cheong Mic'd Up at the Rogers Centre - A day in the life of a player at the Canadian Futures Showcase September 2024

As Blue Jays host another Canadian Futures Showcase, Philip Cheong exemplifies what it’s all about
Philip Cheong is a 17-year-old prospect committed to Stanford University. Of all Canada’s baseball showcases, he says the Jays’ event is “the one.”
Philip Cheong is a major helium name coming out of Area Codes earlier this month. 60-grade bat speed present both in game and in BP, had a 103 max EV as well. Also had the best composite athletic testing profile from the event. 37th on my board

Over the years Canuck hitters, all three Naylor brothers – Josh, Bo and Myles (Mississauga, Ont.), 1B Scott Thorman (Cambridge, Ont.) and Gareth Morgan (North York, Ont.) have put on some memorable displays of power.
It wasn't so much of a power display when scouts gathered, but rather a complete game on display by Philip Cheong of the Ontario Blue Jays. More of a speedy ‘beep-beep’ Cooper Davis (Mississauga, Ont.) display.
Playing for the New York Yankees Cheong (Richmond Hill, Ont.), went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, an RBI, and he scored the tying run. In a 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds Scout Team.

OF – PHILIP CHEONG, YANKEES (Stanford)
He may be a little undersized (5-foot-10, 170 pounds) but this little firecracker can play some mad ball when he gets the itch. Though he may end up at second base in the future, Cheong, can cover a ton of acreage in the meadow, running down a number of fly balls here this week. He also utilized that speed on the base paths by getting six steals in his five games. In Monday’s 8-0 over the White Sox, Cheong walked, and then stole both second and third base in back-to-back pitches before scoring on a wild pitch. Interestingly, Cheong was one of only two Canadian players here this year.

A player similar to Southisene who actually did play both infield and outfield this year is Philip Cheong, who packed a lot of excitement, skill and talent into a 5-10, 170-pound frame.
I use this as affectionately as possible: Cheong, committed to Stanford, is an annoying hitter for pitchers. Perhaps “pesky” paints a better picture. Whatever you want to call it, he’s the type of hitter who drives a pitcher mad by spoiling pitches and poking good offerings into the outfield for singles with his hand-eye coordination, bat control, and contact-based hitting approach that can let pitches travel to use the opposite field or take a big cut at a mistake to pull it. However, don’t let those swings and that approach fool you. His size and a soft single the other way might lure pitchers to sleep before aggressively jumping on a mistake to pull it with impact bat speed. He’s sneaky strong at the plate, which led to a ball hit 103 MPH off the bat and there are definitely doubles and the occasional pull side homer lurking inside his swing. And then he makes pitchers even crazier because he energetically bounces off first and second base ready to steal the next bag at the first opportunity.

GAME TEN
Cincinnati -Reds Vs New York Yankees
Watched the first half of this game on the live feed and there was very little action as all the early pitchers were doing some mad-ass dealing. When I made the drive down to Long Beach and got to Blair Field, I saw that all the scoring had happened in the last few innings as the Yanks rallied from behind to take down the Reds by a run.
Starting pitching was the big key here as the Yanks’ Nicholas Frusco and Reds James Whitaker both went 3.0 innings and gave up just one hit with Frusco collecting four strikeouts and Whitaker earning three. Offensively, Canadian native Philip Cheong (Stanford commit) was 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Yankees.

Keeping Game tied and gets the Win 3 - 2
Philip Cheong races into the LCF gap and goes full extension to make an incredible diving catch. Headed to the bottom of the 7th tied, 2-2 at the Upperclass
Cheong, the Canadian prospect (Bill Crothers Secondary) made one of the top plays of Area Code when he chased down a ball in the left-center gap and went full-extension with a diving catch to rob an extra-base hit, and he has the tools, skill and actions to play second base. A good case can be made no one maximized their talent and skill and better represented who they are as a player better than Cheong, who energetically, confidently and joyfully plays the game with his foot on the gas. Cheong hit .364/.462/.364 and tied Serrano with a team-high six runs scored.
